Tips for a successful family portrait session

TIP # 1 - Choose your outfits wisely. Your clothing choice is so important! Choose outfits that compliment your features and that you are comfortable wearing.

I usually suggest that mom picks her outfit first and then coordinate the rest of the outfits based on mom’s choice. Mom needs to choose something that makes her feel comfortable & confident!

Coordinate colors without being too matchy. If you are going to use a pattern or print, try not to choose multiple patterns or prints. Mix it up with solid colors layered over patterns. This assures us that the photo does not look busy or take away from your beautiful faces! Multiple layers, textures & accessories are great as well! Think of hats, scarves, necklaces etc. Clothing that shows movement is also a favorite of mine. So, dresses that you can swoosh, spin and twirl in!

Tip #2 – This one is REALLY important - please just let your kids be kids. Some of the best captured moments are when they are just playing and being themselves. Let them run around you! Let them explore nature! Please try to steer clear of constant correction or asking them to smile. Just enjoy each other and love on everyone! We want this to be fun for everyone!

Tip #3 – I tell all my clients at the beginning of my sessions that I want everybody to use contact hands- which simply means that everyone is touching someone or something during the session. Examples would be, touching mommy or daddy by holding hands, wrapping your arms around a leg even just swishing your dress, etc. Also, get super-duper close! Like uncomfortably close as this helps to show your connection as a family!
